Calgary Youth Hockey Teams

Calgary is home to a number of youth hockey teams that are part of both the local and national scene. Some of these teams are based on the city itself and others are statewide.

Those based in the city will often be playing against other cities from the same province (ie. Edmonton, Red Deer etc) and those based outside the city will be playing against teams from the provinces that are not located in Alberta.

The citys hockey history dates back to 1921 with the formation of the Western Canada Hockey League, and in 1924, the Tigers became the first major professional team to play in Calgary. The team brought five future Hockey Hall of Fame members to the city in Barney Stanley, Red Dutton, Rusty Crawford, Herb Gardiner and Harry Oliver, capturing three regular season titles and two playoff championships during their six-year run.

Since that time, the city has had a long and rich hockey tradition. The city has hosted the WHL and CHL, as well as a number of NCAA, CHL and AHL hockey teams, including the Calgary Flames.

There are many different types of youth hockey teams to choose from in the city of Calgary, with a range of levels of competition and a variety of ice locations to choose from. The majority of these teams are primarily recreational but some are more competitive in nature and require a higher level of commitment from the participants.

One of the most popular programs in calgary is The First Shift which is a 6 week, 1 session per week program designed for kids who are new to the sport of hockey. It is a great way for kids to get a taste of the game and learn the fundamentals in a fun, accessible way.

Another popular program is First Strides Girls Hockey which offers an introductory 16 session program for kids who are 4 to 8 years old with limited skating experience. This is a great program to get kids into the sport of hockey at an early age and gives them the opportunity to be coached by female mentors as they learn the fundamentals.

The Calgary Sledge Hockey Association is a recreational sledge hockey league in the city of Calgary that welcomes players from all walks of life and ages. They are a non-profit association and operate with the goal of providing fun, social hockey for all participants while building a community.

There are also a number of travel hockey teams that play in the city of Calgary and in surrounding areas. These travel teams are a great opportunity for young players to play on the road and make some valuable contacts.

These travel teams are usually a combination of youth from all over the city and they are a fun, affordable and social way to play the game of hockey. There is a fee for registration but the team will have their equipment covered by the sponsoring organization and they provide transportation to and from games.
